Like so many of America's once bustling industrial centers, Reading, PA, has been on a downward spiral for decades. The city has lost factories, jobs and population. The latest economic recession amplified its burdens. Something that Reading has never lost, however, is hope -- hope and an abiding belief in the power of community. ONE CHRISTMAS STORY: People Rich in Spirit, a new production from Odyssey Networks, takes viewers to the heart of this small American city for a celebration that reflects the true meaning of the holiday season -- hope and caring. CBS will air the one-hour program, without commercials, starting at 11:35 PM ET/PT on Christmas Eve. After fourteen years of debate, political leaders in the Philippines may be on the verge of passing the controversial, anti-life "Reproductive Health Bill" (RH Bill). A week of aggressive moves by Philippine President Benigno Aquino and pro-RH Bill congressmen has drawn to a close a period of amendments and debate. A vote on the bill in the House is now imminent. "If I speak at a college about unlocking the Gospel, fifteen people will show up," said Joseph Pearce, author of the new book, Bilbo's Journey: Discovering the Hidden Meaning of The Hobbit. "But if I speak about unlocking the 'Lord of the Rings,' 300 show up." And so, the English-born Tolkien scholar and writer of fifteen books begins with dragons, dwarves, and elves, as he unlocks the deeper meaning behind J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel "The Hobbit." The six-mile walk was flagged off by the commissioner of prisons and took participants through the heart of Nairobi. Although so many people attended that the staff had difficulties counting them all, CBI Kenya Director Jefferson Gathu estimates that 3,500 people participated. December 6 marks Saint Nicholas Day, and I thought I'd mark the Christmas season by telling the story of Santa Claus's namesake. But before I do, I should remark that, historically speaking, there's not much we really know about Nicholas. Though he's one of the most popular saints in the Greek and Latin churches, his existence isn't attested by any historical document. All we can say is that he was probably the bishop of Myra (near modern Finike, Turkey) sometime in the 300s. <more...> While the upcoming North Korea missile launch has the entire world looking skyward, author Eric Foley says attention should focus underground.
"By underground I don't mean subterranean nuclear tests," explains Foley. "I mean the continued faithful witness of 100,000 underground North Korean Christians to the truth that God, not Kim Il Sung, has always been, is, and always will be in control in North Korea." A former fashion model is outraged with Victoria Secrets for its recent effort to appeal to a younger clientele. Nicole Clark, director of "Cover Girl Culture," tells OneNewsNow the lingerie maker should be ashamed for choosing teen star Justin Bieber as a featured performer in its annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Temperance is moderation in emotions, thoughts, and actions. It is self-control. Temperance is mastery in all things. <more...> |
