Judge Hassan Yassin, Libya’s Assistant Public Prosecutor and head of the Public Prosecution’s technical office, met on Thursday with the Coptic defendants detained in Tagora Prison in Libya, pending investigations for charges of proselytization.
A statement issued from the public prosecutor’s office said the assistant public prosecutor and Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Maghreb Affairs, Dr. Yousif el-Sharkawi, held a meeting with Fr. Timothy Bishara Adly, the priest of Tripoli’s Coptic Church, and a number of Coptic representatives to discuss their problems and affairs.
A statement issued from the public prosecutor’s office said the assistant public prosecutor and Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Maghreb Affairs, Dr. Yousif el-Sharkawi, held a meeting with Fr. Timothy Bishara Adly, the priest of Tripoli’s Coptic Church, and a number of Coptic representatives to discuss their problems and affairs.
The statement added there are four Copts accused of proselytization, and those detained were arrest in Benghazi where a public lawyer referred to investigations to the public prosecutor.
It noted the investigations were still being conducted, and the Libyan judicial authorities have given it priority due to its importance and sensitivity.
It added that a Libyan judicial official told the Coptic defendants that the Egyptian Prosecutor-General Talaat Ibrahim pays attention to their case, stressing that he is keen to take the legal measures that ensure the rights of the defendants. He promised them that the crisis would end in the near future.
