Pope Francis' recent words about "little monsters" resonated in a special way with the Rev. Kevin Manion, who is working on preparing documents for the upcoming sainthood cause for Fr. Aloysius Ellacuria, CMF. Manion served as Fr. Aloysius' secretary in the 1970's. The Pope said recently that priestly formation is a "work of art, not a police action" and "we must form their hearts. Otherwise we are creating little monsters. When these little monsters mold the people of God, this really gives me goose bumps," said the Pope. While the Internet brings a wealth of information instantly to our fingertips, it also throws our children into an ocean of risk. Too often our kids navigate those waters without a life preserver and become bait for the enemy’s piranha-like feeding frenzy to attack the weak. Parents today have more than their neighborhoods, schools and kids’ friends to worry about. The enemy is cleverly casting nets online fishing for their souls and God’s men must be aware of where their kids are swimming. For example, social media has brought the world together, while giving predators tools to connect while disguised in sheep’s clothing. Online video gaming, once a harmless recreation (remember Atari?), now provides realms of obscene and violent behaviors. And with every online search, marketers of all kinds of dangerous material get closer to home. Church members, lawyers and Christians visiting the family of detained Protestant Pastor Zhang Shaojie were beaten, harassed and detained by “hired thugs”, police and government agencies on 23 and 24 December 2013. On 23 December, Pastor Cao Nan of Shenzhen, who had travelled to Nanle in Henan province to conduct a service to pray for and rally support for Pastor Zhang’s case, was dragged from his car by local police, who beat him. He was then taken to a police station where he had pepper spray sprayed into his eyes, according to an interview with Radio Free Asia and reports by Chinese Human Rights Defenders. Bill Nye "The Science Guy" is set to visit Kentucky next month for a debate on science and creation with the man who founded the Creation Museum. Founder Ken Ham says the museum will host Nye, the former host of a popular youth science show, on February 4 (see details). Nye has been critical of creationists for their opposition to evolution and asserting that the Old Testament is a literal account of the Earth's beginnings. Last year in an online video that drew nearly 6 million views, Nye said teaching creationism was bad for children. |
