The World Council of Armenians called the UN Security Council and the kidnappers of Aleppo’s archbishops, Youhana Ibrahim and Paulis Yazigi, on Thursday to contain the current crisis that could lead to dire consequences for the Christians of Syria.
The council said, “the violence against the Christian is nothing new, but the notable increase in sectarian violence could push the Christian minority to flee the country." He suggested that the kidnapping of the two archbishops shocked Christians all over the world.
The council added, “the UN Security Council should pass a statement condemning the kidnapping of the two archbishops as well as the sectarian violence.” It referred to statements issued by the UN Security Council condemning the attack targeting a mosque in Damascus that led to the deaths of 40 people, including a high-profile Muslim cleric.
The council also warned of an exodus of the Syriac Christians if the international community did not interfere to save the archbishops. It added that a large number of Christians ask the World Council of Armenians about how to flee from the land of their grandparents.
The council demanded that the kidnappers release the innocent archbishops and bring an end to the painful incident, adding that the Syriac people would help to ensure their return. It also called on the residents of Aleppo to provide information regarding the whereabouts of the archbishops. Finally, it remained hopeful that the UN Security Council would interfere to resolve this case.
It is important to mention that the two archbishops, Youhana Ibrahim and Paulis Yazigi, were kidnapped on April 22 in Aleppo, when unidentified suspects stopped their car and killed their driver.
