There are many readers out there that will be screaming "MYTH!!!". I definitely understand where they are coming from. When your first date almost ends in date rape you really have a hard time believing that true love even exists. I know now that it does exist and we are constantly being pursued by it. God loves us with a true love. There is nothing we can do for him to love us more and there is nothing we can do to make him love us less. He waits patiently for us. He walks with us even when we ignore him or do not realize he is there with us. He will never leave you, never forsake you. His love is unconditional. No matter what you have done, no matter who you are now, no matter where your life is heading, He loves you. He loves each one of us so much that if we were the only ones on the planet, God would have still sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. What does he ask for in return for this love? YOU.
For those who are alone this Valentine's Day, please know that you are never truly alone. God is there waiting for you. Have you ever loved someone and not had it reciprocated? I have and it sucks! God just wants you to love Him back. It is through loving Him back that we truly find out what true love is all about.
1 John 4:18-19 "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he [God] first loved us." God doesn't want us to come to him out of fear, but as a response to the love He has given so freely to us.
1 Peter 4:8 "Above all, love each other deeply because love covers a multitude of sins." God not only wants you to love Him back, He also wants you to share that love with others. If every person on the planet was able to love each other the way that God loves us, there would be no crime, war, famine, etc. We would all forgive and be forgiven.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." This is the essence of true love. It is not a myth, it is a reality. This is the love God offers us, and isn't this kind of love worth holding on to?
My challenge to all of you reading this article is to go out and try to love in this way tomorrow. Whether you are loving your co-workers, your friends, your family, or your spouse, try this approach to love on Valentine’s Day and see what happens. This just might be the best Valentine's Day you have ever had.
