A family expert believes the recent murder of a young Australian man in Oklahoma is a wakeup call for the entire country.

Three teenagers in Duncan, 80 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, are accused of gunning down 22-year-old Christopher Lane last week while he was jogging, reportedly stating afterwards they did it just for “the fun of it” and because they were “bored and didn’t have anything to do.” Prosecutors are calling the murder of the East Central University baseball player a “thrill killing.”

Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America told reporters it's a statement about the moral decline and breakdown of the family in America.

“We don't have good role models for boys today and we have far too many young men who do not have the kind of stable home life that enables them to have a right perspective on life,” she offers. “They don't have a father image. They don't have a male role model in their lives.”

Crouse says what ought to shock every individual is that the same type of incident could victimize them. It just happened to happen this time in Oklahoma.

“What kind of shallow thinking are we promoting in young people today that this kind of worldview is acceptable – and that it's acceptable to just go out on a lark and laugh about it afterwards when you've taken a young man's life?” she asks. “I think it's a very tragic happening, and I think it's a wakeup call for our culture.”

A fund has been established online to help Lane’s parents travel from Australian to collect his body. At press time more than $91,000 had been raised. The goal was $15,000.

A message at that website from the family expresses their gratitude as well as their plan to move any remaining funds into a Christopher Lane Foundation that will provide support an organization their son was passionate about. The website was set up by one of Lane’s teammates in Oklahoma.
