The Pope is set to begin his foray into Twitter starting in mid-December. Pope Benedict XVI recently joined the online social network and is scheduled to start "tweeting" on December 12 from his personal handle of @Pontifex. Vatican communications advisor Greg Burke says that the handle was chosen not only for its Latin translation as "Pope," but also "bridge-builder," suggesting unity. The Pope is expected to begin tweeting in six languages.

The Vatican has been looking to increase its online and social media presence for purposes of spreading the faith, particularly to younger generations. Burke says the Pope will tweet "as often as he wants."

Since joining Twitter in early December, Pope Benedict has gained more than 480,000 Twitter followers, a number that has been increasing by the second.
