Colossians 3:12-14 - Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Christian Living is a major theme of several books in the Bible. Colossians is the fourth of these books that we will be looking at.
Paul's letter to the Colossian church emphasized the source of Christian Living which is Jesus Christ. The power to be able to live a Christian Life comes from Jesus Christ, we cannot do it on our own power or we will fail. Jesus death brought us the gift of the forgiveness of sins. By his resurrection we have received new life, and it is through this new life that we transform more and more to be like him. This life is characterized by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, peace, thanksgiving, joy and above all love. Paul ended this section with specific instructions for Christian households.
Source Found in Christ:
Colossians 1:11 - being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully
Colossians 1:29 - To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.
Colossians 2:6-7 - So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Colossians 2:12 - having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
Colossians 3:1-4 - Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Gaining Power Over Sin:
Colossians 1:14 - in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 2:11 - In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ,
Colossians 2:13-14 - When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
Colossians 2:20 - Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules:
Positive Christian Qualities:
Colossians 1:11-12 - being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.
Colossians 3:12-4:1 - Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism. Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
