There is a growing movement in Canada of women complaining that they were coerced into giving up their babies in church-run homes for unwed mothers from the late 1800s to the 1980s. Some are complaining that they were never informed they could keep their babies and go on social assistance. There have been calls for a government inquiry and threats of lawsuits being launched similar to the lawsuits over Indian residential schools. The Salvation Army has launched a review of the maternity homes it ran. However, other women say they were grateful that the homes provided shelter, food and friendships that no one else would provide.
